As soil is weak in absorbing tensile stresses, geogrids are used to prevent or reduce soil particle movement through interlocking (Stabilisation) between the aggregate particles and the apertures of the geogrid. As a results of this interaction, tensile forces are mobilized in the geogrid (Reinforcement) and the resistance of the improved soil layer against deformation is increased.

Waterproofing
Waterproofing any site is a pivotal stage of the build, preventing water damage to the foundations, which could cause harm to the construction should the problem persist.
BS8102:2009 is the code of practice for protection of below ground structures against water from the ground.
The British Standard gives information on what waterproofing methods are available and what specifications the various products should meet.
The three types of waterproofing covered under BS8102:2009 are:
• Type A: Barrier system applied internally or externally (membrane, cementitious etc.)
• Type B: Water tight concrete
• Type C: Cavity drain
BS8102:2009 also states that if the risk is high, two methods of protection should be considered (dual system approach) and all waterproofing designs should consider maintainability and reparability.
